Roseville Baneda bowl The Roseville Baneda pattern is a favorite among many collectors. Even those who prefer the traditional single-color matte finishes often remark on the vivid and bright presentation these color choices bring to this pattern. The Roseville Baneda green vase offers those low resting handles that are always popular. Remember, this pattern was often marked with the foil labels — and this vase has its intact. This piece is marked with a red crayon, which is also another popular way of marking these patterns. And speaking of those vivid color schemes, we also just added a Roseville Wisteria tan bowl as well as a Wisteria tan vase.

Take a look at the marks on this RumRill console bowl right. A brief aside about RedWing and RumRill: Peters and Reed often has three stilt marks, too, and the old pieces show red clay under the glaze. So, if you see three little flaws on a glazed bottom, these are not damage—they are stilt marks or firing pin marks used for the firing process. Examining the bottom for stilt marks may reveal some numbers that may help with identification, too.

The Numbers Brush-McCoy For many years, three numbers were used to identify many of the shapes for American pottery. Some companies only used two numbers for some of the shapes, and some used four. These are numbers that are in the mold, not handwritten.

AB Finish This iridescent finish used on glass and plastic beads is named after the colorful lights seen in northern skies, the aurora borealis, or AB for short. The finish is also called rainbow. AB beads may be any color and are usually monochromatic and transparent, but they may also be matte or even pearlized, as well as striped or silver-lined.

Beads are given an AB finish by passing them through vaporized metal ions. This process leaves a thin deposit on their surface of tiny metallic particles, which break up light waves into the colors of the spectrum, much as water droplets refract sunlight to create a rainbow. This iridescent play of light causes the underlying color of the beads to shift, sometimes considerably. AB finish is widely used on seed beads and bugles; Czech molded glass beads, both smooth and faceted; plastic plain and fancy shapes; and cut glass crystals.

You should probably do better diligence on your stories before you publish them Anonymous I’m approaching 70 years old now and visited back at Christmas time with family at Corona del Mar. There is one rock about one third of the way outthat is very unstable and should be tended to by some city people as someone my loose his balance out there.

There is a rock like that on the West Jetty by The Wedge also about half way out. I love that hike out to the ends of both jetties. I’ll be doing it every year ’til the end of time.

This is so in point of size alone. On the town’s one thousand and seventy-five acres some eighteen thousand people live — thus making the little town by the sea one of the more important of the State. Winthrop, is a beautiful town. Its location between the Atlantic Ocean on the East and Boston Harbor on the West is alone enough to establish the fact.

Even more, Winthrop is a town of gentle hills which, although now built over with about 4, houses, gives almost every window a wide prospect over miles of ocean, marsh and a city just far enough away to be remote and yet near enough to be conveniently reached within a half-hour or so. Probably one of the greatest factors concerned in the production of Winthrop’s charms are the many elms and maples lining her 36 miles of streets and shading most of her homes and all her public buildings.

I honestly do not know why I find the story below so charming, but the picture of the camel is really good, it is unique, and represents a new subject added to the catalog of rock art imagery. Camel painting, Kapova Cave, look4ward. After some restoration work to remove built-up calcite layers a wonderful painting of a two-humped Bactrian camel has been revealed in a Russian cave, which raises questions about the travel patterns of prehistoric peoples.

Located in Russia’s Bashkir Ural Territory, the limestone grotto is almost a natural museum to Paleolithic art with more than examples of ancient depictions. In the course of excavating the Kapova cave, only the upper layer of deposits with traces of activity of Paleolithic artists, about 17, – 19, years ago, has been dated so far. If, therefore, the bearing or azimuth the angle East from North of the axis is measured, then the corresponding declination of the sun i. This orientation to the Mid-summer sunrise point was clearly carried out by the designer or designers of Stonehenge with great care, as will be seen in the course of this study. It is in keeping with the remarkable architecture of the principal portion of the Monument, which is much in advance of the more primitive structures in Britain, and suggests a later date than these.

Sir Norman Lockyer, who was one of the greatest British astronomers of his time, published a most interesting book in , entitled Stonehenge and Other British Stone Monuments Astronomically Considered. In the year he made similar astronomical observations at Stonehenge, and examined with great care this and other ancient British Stone monuments which have an astronomical character. The first, in the exact prolongation of the central line of the Avenue towards the midsummer sunrise point, was an ancient British fortification situated on the summit of Sidbury Hill, 8 miles distant from Stonehenge to the North-East.

The second, towards the South-West, or midwinter sunset point, and equally in line with the axis of the monument, produced in that direction, was marked by the Grovely fortification, at a distance of 6 miles from Stonehenge. Both these fortifications are prehistoric, and are believed by archaeological authorities to be of Early Iron Age.

This opinion was expressed by Mr. We shall see, later on, the bearing of this matter on the date of construction of Stonehenge. The care taken with the orientation of Stonehenge, and the manner in which it was linked with these distant sighting marks on the horizon, both to the midsummer sunrise point in the North-East and to the midwinter sunset point in the South-West, suggests that this central line indicates the solstitial position of the sun, both at midsummer and at midwinter, at the date of the foundation of the monument.

The astronomical date, derived from a true curve of the Obliquity of the Ecliptic for ancient times, should therefore agree with the date of the monument found by Archaeology, if the latter is also correctly established. These observations were made by Sir Norman in conjunction with Mr. Penrose, an eminent archaeologist and astronomer, who had previously made a notable study of the astronomical orientation of ancient Greek temples.
