We are working on solving systems of equations and started out by solving via graphing. This way they truly understand what they are finding when solving a system. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups. Look at them working so hard!

Two 55 minute class periods would have been better. This year I knew I had to change that. I decided to start with a concept that worked wonders in my middle school math classes, Math Magic. I have them tell me their result, and then I tell them the number they chose by simply subtracting one from their result and dividing by 2. We talk about how they have to use a variable because everyone picked a different number.
After they attempt this and share it with their partner, we talk about any errors.

And the best line is when the author, a confirmed bachelor, says of his married friends: Although they may miss the thrill of sexual novelty, absolutely nobody misses dating. It’s a cruel joke played on us by modern society — while human beings are hard-wired to seek love and companionship, our culture plops giant boulders in the path of intimacy and calls them “dates. Since my last column about weddings , I’ve gotten a slew of unhappy replies from women and the occasional man saying, “Quit complaining — I’d love to have your problems.
Meeting the partner is the hard part. Assuming you are a person who puts up with the suckiness of dating for a purpose — to find a longterm partner — then chances are you’re looking to find an end to your dating days if you’re someone who goes on dates simply to have sex, or get out of the house on weekends, then this column will hold no use for you — but read it anyway!
And a big part of reaching this proverbial happy end is facing a few icky truths. I met my husband-to-be at a party in New York City, when I was in my early ’30s meaning I’m now in my less-early ’30s. Casey Anthony was lucky. I’m just someone who decided I was ready to find a husband, and then did the necessary work to procure one. Yes, I said “work. We’re taught to work hard to achieve our goals.
Such concepts would have been part of everyday life in hunter-gatherer societies. The idea of the “number” concept evolving gradually over time is supported by the existence of languages which preserve the distinction between “one”, “two”, and “many”, but not of numbers larger than two. For example, paleontologists have discovered in a cave in South Africa , ochre rocks about 70, years old, adorned with scratched geometric patterns.
Moreover, hunters and herders employed the concepts of one, two, and many, as well as the idea of none or zero, when considering herds of animals. One common interpretation is that the bone is the earliest known demonstration of sequences of prime numbers and of Ancient Egyptian multiplication.

Deductive and inductive reasoning math Video transcript Think about this real world problem. To estimate the population of a town in upcoming years, one of the town workers collected populations from past years and made this table. So they have years starting with and going up by increments of 10 years. And they just figure out the population of the town in each of those years. The town wants to estimate the population for , , and To do this, will you be using inductive reasoning or deductive reasoning?
Now before answering that, let’s just think about what inductive reasoning is and what deductive reasoning is. Inductive reasoning is looking for a pattern or looking for a trend. So it’s looking for a trend or a pattern and then generalizing. You could imagine, it’s kind of extrapolating the information you have, generalizing. Deductive reasoning is taking some set of data or some set of facts and using that to come up with other, or deducing some other, facts that you know are true.
When you generalize you don’t know necessarily whether the trend will continue, but you assume it will.
Babylonian mathematics refers to any mathematics of the peoples of Mesopotamia modern Iraq from the days of the early Sumerians through the Hellenistic period almost to the dawn of Christianity. The first few hundred years of the second millennium BC Old Babylonian period , and the last few centuries of the first millennium BC Seleucid period. Later under the Arab Empire , Mesopotamia, especially Baghdad , once again became an important center of study for Islamic mathematics.
In contrast to the sparsity of sources in Egyptian mathematics , our knowledge of Babylonian mathematics is derived from more than clay tablets unearthed since the s. Some of these appear to be graded homework.

Brian swims at twice the speed that a river is flowing, downstream from one moored boat to another and back again, taking 12 minutes altogether. An algebra task which depends on members of the group noticing the needs of others and responding.
Distributive Property Matching Students stand and find their match. Teacher says freeze and then they find their new match. We did this a few times. I also had them try without talking. They said this was the best activity of the three. Last we did the Kagan structure Simultaneous Roundtable. Each member of the group wrote one down. Then papers were rotated. Students would do the first step for simplifying the new expression in front of them and then pass it again.
We continued doing a step and passing papers. The last person checked the work and wrote a new problem. We did this for 3 rounds. I have an Algebra Support class with 23 of my Algebra students. So we did another activity a few days later.
1:1 Speed Dating Activity – Sharing Good Practice
This is where I share five teaching ideas I’ve seen on Twitter. Well it’s been fun teaching in this week’s heatwave hasn’t it?! I long for an air-conditioned classroom. Still, all this lovely sunshine serves as a nice reminder that the summer holidays are just around the corner. Nice to see some Twitter-based collaborative resource-making in action.
Feb 14, · Others have posted about various “speed dating” review games, but I just wanted to share one I did recently in Chemistry which went better than I could have expected! We’ve been working on Chemical equations, and I want them to (1) write the .
I finished the material about 2 weeks ago, so I have been working with plenty of review time. But, with lots of review time, it becomes a challenge to keep students engaged. I know that we have to keep practicing multiple choice questions and free response questions, but we need different methods to do it. The students get tired of hearing me talk: So, here are a few ways to keep students engaged in practicing: Another way to try speed dating is to start the students in groups of two.
Make as many questions as you will have groups. Set a timer for 2 minutes. When the time starts, students can only speak to the student they are partnered with. They work on one of the questions. When the timer goes off, one student moves around the circle one way, and the other students moves around the circle the other way.
Students work with many other partners, and with only 2 minutes to work there is no time for goofing off! In this puzzle, students are given approximately 10 questions of the same type. Students work the questions and then add up their answers.

Once they have it complete, they raise their hand to have it checked by the teacher. Once everyone has it right, they are the master of their card. You then start the activity. I set my desks up so students are facing each other. You set students across from each other. They then switch cards and perform the problem.
Apr 08, · Re: Algebra 2 Question!!! 11/26/ PM The effects are not obvious with high airspeed and low wind speed, but as you can imagine, if a pilot of a small plane flies a heading of due west at mph true airspeed, while the wind is mph from due north, then the plane will be blown southward by miles as it moves westward miles.
Posted on November 3, 5 comments A problem on a recent assessment I gave to my 9th graders caused me to reflect upon the role of efficiency in mathematical problem solving. In particular, how much value is there in asking students to be efficient with their approaches, if all paths lead to a similar solution? As such, I find I need to embed some algebra refreshing through the semester to dust off cobwebs and set expectations for honors high school work.
For this assessment, we reviewed linear functions from soup to nuts. My observation is that these students often have had slope-intercept form burned into their memory, but that the link between this and standard form is weak or non-existant. Both problem and solution are given in standard form. Nothing, nothing at all.
